100 Deadliest Days of Summer

As we make plans for vacations and summer fun it’s important to be mindful that this time is also known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer.” This is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day and not so coincidentally the same time that teenage drivers are out of school for the summer.

According to AAA, an average of ten people a day are killed in crashes involving a teen driver. Over the summer of 2016, more than 1,000 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver, which is a 14 percent increase compared to the rest of the year.

This is a perfect opportunity to speak with teen drivers about dangers of risky driving such as speeding, distractions, and nighttime driving.

Nighttime Driving

  1. 36 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities involving teen drivers occurred between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

  2. 1 in 10 of all motor vehicle nighttime crash fatalities involved a teen driver

  3. Data shows a 22 percent increase in the average number of nighttime crashes per day involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days compared to the rest of the year

Speeding

  1. 1 in 10 of all motor vehicle speed-related fatalities involved a teen driver

  2. 29 percent of all motor vehicle deaths involving a teen driver was speed-related

Speak With Teen Drivers

This is a perfect opportunity to speak with teen drivers about dangers of risky driving such as speeding, distractions, and nighttime driving. Some suggestions included

  1. Discussing with teens early and often the dangers of risky driving situations, such as speeding and nighttime driving.

  2. Teach by example and minimize your own risky behavior when behind the wheel.

  3. Make a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules for teen drivers. Consider setting driving limits that are stronger than a state’s law and enforce those limits.
